     Senses work together to form an image, motory works together towards locomotion.

      For example, the “Posterior Kinetic Chain” (PCK) holds the body upright and moves us forward on the sagittal plane.  Muscles function out of memory, so when we’re first born is a proprioceptive “clean slate”. Every movement learned thereafter is built upon and reinforced (such as being left or right footed). The goal of our Movements its to challenge these existing neuro-motor pathways and reorganize them. “Exercises with/without visual feedback tend to be most beneficial”.

     We walk and run in a “contralateral” pattern. This means our left leg is accompanied by a right arm swing and vice versa. Managing all the swinging levers is complex at times of high demand. We select exercises based on which pattern they use. Starting with gross, working towards fine motor-control.

     When muscles engage, they only shorten. Thus, motor-function is the direction and force (or speed), of the shortening muscles. To reach into motor-control, we’re looking for exercises that challenge the directional side of this equation. Which direction to contract is a decision from the brain, that is best informed by sensory functions. Understanding planes of motion, and how your body moves through them is essential to improving body awareness.

     Working with more/less stable surfaces is a great way to take end motor-control to the of edge sensory-awareness. The thing is, there’s no end to stability, you can always move slower.

     Just as muscles play supporting roles to each other, so do senses. Getting to know each one may help provide clarity through times of sensory alteration, or stress. Our Meditations are aimed at honing in on specific sensory-inputs.
